Lovers Lagoon I: Love is in the Air

By Kamille Tate

There’s a brisk calmness in the air as the season changed from summer to autumn. As nature prepares for hibernation, many humans are engulfed in securing a partner for "cuffing season". A time when it seems more than ever individuals begin to arrange in couples to overcome the potential loneliness of the holiday season.

More so than February, when established couples are expressing their admiration for one another, autumn and winter calls for some to yearn for companionship and other benefits of coupledom. As the idea of connection or belongingness may come to our minds and hearts, the concept of love or even developing a crush may be brushed aside as academia is the focus of our time at Chaffey College. However, perhaps throughout our collaborative path along the journey toward our goals and dreams we also make memories we can cherish and smile as we reflect one day.

As a hopeful romantic, I am inclined to assist my fellow Panthers in the realms of love, romance and relationships. Many are aware of how our intrapersonal relationships influence the experiences within all other relationships. As we strengthen our relationship with ourselves, through self-care, self-love and other therapeutic, holistic and/or spiritual practices we are better able to embrace love, care and kindness from others.

With each passing “Hello", "How are you?” or other expression of acknowledgement, I feel a bond on campus. Allowing the atmosphere to embrace the collective focus of academia adding a delightful approach to the semester. It feels like a breath of fresh air within a society obsessed with artificial intelligence and hustle culture. As we set goals and make plans for the next few years, wouldn’t it be great to unearth a story of “How we met at Chaffey”.

With that, I'd like to invite you to write us at The Breeze for advice concerning a situation within your "love life". I’d like to offer helpful tips which I found useful, as well as cautionary tales of lovers lost; as I re-discover myself as a queer, nontraditional student embracing love.

In addition, for those in love, send us your expressions in the form of an ode or sonnet and you might see your poem in an edition of The Breeze in the Lover's Lagoon column.

Until next time, express human kindness.

With Love,

Kamille Tate
