Panthers and Their Games

Video games provide tons of different experiences through the sheer variety of their releases. With different characters, art and game-play styles to choose from, many players have formed specific tastes when it comes to games.

Chaffey students, whether occasional players or die-hard gamers, have a variety of reasons why they enjoy the games they play. Some of them have shared their favorite games and what they enjoy about them.

Daniel Hu, 19, Computer Science major, stated: “My current favorite game is Silksong. A lot of the fights test your skills, and pattern recognition… I think with the great enemy design, and fluid movement, combat feels like following a dance, and figuring out the rhythm.”

Hollow Knight: Silksong has been an interest for many as Team Cherry’s newest game. It has been in development for nearly a decade and serves as a follow-up to their game Hollow Knight. It is considered to be a difficult action-adventure game, and many fans were eager to pick it up on release. The recent release has been to many fans' excitement, including Hu.

Hu stresses that the challenge of the game makes it all the more satisfying. He feels that the game gives you the range of movement and abilities to be able to get through the game.

“I'm someone who plays relatively cautiously and analytically, so I often take a few minutes analyzing enemy/boss movement patterns to figure out how to dodge and when to attack," Hu said. "A lot of the fights test your skills and pattern recognition.”

For Zamiya Batson, 19, Performing Arts major, games such as Mario Kart have a stronger draw. Batson feels that the Mario Kart series has a unique charm with its cartoon-like style and characters. She also thinks that the controls of the game make it easy to pick up. Compared to other racing games where the aim is to be more realistic, Mario Kart focuses on an arcade style approach that is more inviting to the casual player.

Tyjannah Sowers, 18, Theater Arts major, thinks that the immersive feeling of an action game like the Tomb Raider series is unique, and enjoys the complex environments of the games.

“Honestly the Tomb Raider games are my favorites. I like the action and combat. I think the combination of the action and the combat make it special for me," Sowers stated.

Rebecca Landors, 18, Nursing major, thinks that the best part of games are the multiplayer modes.

Landors said, “My favorite game is Fortnite. I really like that you’re able to interact with people you haven’t met before.”

She also notes that Fortnite was able to help her get comfortable with socializing, which is something that she values with multiplayer games: “Personally, it helps me branch out with people in real life. I feel like the team building and socialization aspect is really important in real life.”

Of the many kinds of games available today -- whether it is a fast paced multiplayer experience, or a slow single-player strategy game -- one thing is certain, Panthers love to play games.
