Critical fire weather conditions today, above normal temperatures continue

All across Northern California, there are very dry and warm conditions. High temperatures will be in the 90s today to Wednesday. There are winds through midday today, which causes potential concerns for fire weather. As well as having low humidity, this only increases the concern and chances of Northern California fires. This is 15 to 20 degrees above the normal time for this year, and this will likely initiate onshore flow. As a result, it will cool temperatures back into the high 70’s and low 80’s.

Today in History

Today is May 4th, the 124th day of 2021. Highlighting the important dates of today’s history, we acknowledge, honor or celebrate this day. Aside from being Star Wars Day, many important events took place that day. Throughout the 1900s, we see political and pop culture events occuring. In 1945 during World War II, German forces in the Netherlands, Denmark and northwest Germany agreed to surrender. The first Grammy Award occurred in 1959, where it was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. That marked a milestone of our Hollywood industry and the start of Grammy Awards. In 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen had open fire during an anti-war protest located in Kent State University. This killed four students and injured nine others. Throughout the 20th and 21st century, we see many events, both positive and negative, reflecting this day.

Why some vaccinated people won’t go maskless -- even outdoors

As people are getting vaccinated, Americans are no longer required to wear a mask in some instances when they are outside. However, some people continue to take precautions even when they are indoors. In Utah, the state’s mask mandate expired in April, however some businesses still continue to enforce face coverings. As the post-pandemic world is starting, people will experience many types of feelings including fear, confusion and anxiety. Especially for people who have lost loved ones due to the Coronavirus, this may be a challenge to resume life normally. As face masks have become a daily routine the past year, many people find it hard to let go of it just yet.

San Francisco moves to yellow tier, triggering long list of openings

San Francisco will be the first Bay Area county to advance to the least-stringent yellow tier. They are able to move forward with reopening and expanding their activities as well as shops. Aligning with the state’s public health order, they will continue to have certain expectations. Businesses such as indoor bars, entertainment and libraries must be at a limited capacity. Many are disappointed by these limitations, however the prevention of illness and death is still a priority in San Francisco. 62% of citizens 16 and older have been vaccinated, with much of the population of the country yet to be. As the country is slowly transitioning to the yellow tier, the number of people getting tested is the main factor that keeps the county in the orange tier.
